Spruce up your work surroundings

Spruce up your work surroundings to beat the winter woes. What better time to lift your team’s spirits by sprucing up their working environment and boost their mental wellbeing?    Workplaces should be thoroughly cleaned, and in addition, cleaning should be taking place more regularly. We understand that cosmetic changes may add a bit of strain to budgets, however, spending a bit of money on improving the general atmosphere of the working environment is an excellent investment as it results in a general uplifting of spirits and a general productivity boost.   Spruce up your Work Surroundings with Affordable changes    Keep in mind that this exercise does not need to break the bank. There are many things you can do to improve the workplace look and feel that doesn’t cost a fortune.   Adding some office plants, for example, does wonders – at a relatively low cost. Plants are a very effective way to add a design element to any space and they also contribute to a healthier environment by reducing carbon dioxide and increasing oxygen levels.    There are other cost-effective ways to improve your surroundings. Fixing any broken fittings, changing blown light bulbs, updating artwork, replacing signage that is either out of date or faded. There are also seasonal tasks as mentioned in our previous blog.   Some really basic changes include taking a look at the things we usually look past because they are always there, like notice boards. Take a good look and see what is no longer relevant. Remove all redundant or outdated notices and rearrange the board to look neat and fresh. This change will make people ‘notice’ the board again.   Other measures to boost mental well-being in the office   If you have an outdoor space, have you done what you can

Building Maintenance – How to Prepare for the Season Ahead

As the leaves start their glorious displays of deep reds, burnt orange and other shades of autumn there are a couple of things we can do to prepare for the season ahead. A well-maintained commercial property has regular care and cleaning, but seasonal changes prompt us to pay closer attention to certain tasks and slightly adjust how we do other regular tasks. The earlier dusk and later dawn periods afford us the best opportunity to enjoy the colourful displays, but as we approach winter, the leaves start to fall to the ground in a not so beautiful display that needs to be constantly raked and disposed of or re-used as mulch. This is an important time to increase the regularity of gutter checks and cleaning.  With leaves falling constantly, gutters are easily blocked, and this can cause expensive water damage if not properly maintained. If exterior painting is required, now is a great time to start planning as temperatures are moderate and the likelihood of rain is reduced in certain parts of the country. For the same reasons, it is a good time to consider any paving requirements.  You’ll find some more information about our hardscaping services here.  Building maintenance and commercial garden maintenance play an important part in keeping your premises pest-free. Damages to the building’s exterior can invite insects – cracks and holes should be filled and repaired. Maintaining your landscaping is also an important part of pest control. All shrubbery should be neatly trimmed year-round, as these are the places bugs can breed and build nests. Depending on where you live in South Africa, you’ll either be approaching a rainy season, or a dry and dusty season.  While rain water will not make clean windows dirty, it will make dirty windows dirtier.  We think that Autumn is

Do you work in a Clean Workplace?

There are many industries in which a clean workplace is totally non-negotiable and even controlled by legislation.  Think restaurants, fast food outlets, hospitals, and abattoirs – these industries require a high level of cleanliness and hygiene for obvious reasons, but so does a normal office environment, and now even more so than before the pandemic. The industries mentioned above are obvious ones when thinking of sanitary environments, but this is often something that falls low on the list of priorities in a normal office environment.  There are also industries that are considered more ‘dirty’ than others and often times, the workplaces reflect the grubby nature of their work.  A vehicle workshop may be a good example of this (although these days many of them are exceptionally clean). But there is more to dirt than meets the eye.  Bacteria and germs cannot be seen but need to be eliminated as regularly as possible so as not to present health hazards. In much the same way that you are more likely to want to spend time with somebody who takes after their own personal hygiene than somebody who doesn’t – you may want to spend time in a clean and hygienic environment more than a dirty environment. Benefits of a Clean Workplace A clean and tidy working environment has the following benefits: Shows that you care about your environment and your business Shows that you respect your employees and your customers Ensures productivity through improved overall health and wellbeing of staff Creates a safer workplace Promotes better focus and increases productivity Is office cleaning and hygiene on your radar? Many organisations spend thousands, if not millions on developing their brand, but are reluctant to invest in keeping their spaces clean and hygienic and pleasant to work in.  This makes no sense as

Garden Maintenance Services

Garden maintenance services giving you a headache? Companies invest large amounts of money ensuring their workplaces are aesthetically pleasing offices and sometimes factor in office acoustics, but very few organisations factor in the negative effects of noisy garden maintenance services. Effects of noise on office productivity Numerous studies have been carried out over the years to measure the effects of noise in the workplace. Considering the number of hours spent at work, nearly a third of our lives, it is clearly important that the environment in which we work is comfortably geared towards productivity. Some individuals claim to be more productive when listening to music of their choice. While the right amount of noise might provide some benefits to certain kinds of work challenges under the right circumstances, prolonged exposure to moderate noise levels can lead to hearing damage and loss over time. Individuals can make use of personal earphones/headsets to listen to background music, if they choose to do so. When it comes to obstructive noise however, there is simply no way to focus. A study at the University of Berkeley analysed acoustic satisfaction in office environments. Researchers found 40 percent of respondents indicated noise interferes with their ability to complete their work. A further 64 percent were dissatisfied by their colleagues’ phone conversations, and 76 percent found overhearing private conversations distracting. I know that I personally dread Mondays not for the reasons you may think, but because that’s the day that the lawn gets mowed, even my poor Labrador hides under my desk shaking in fear of the dreaded lawn mower. And as luck would have it that’s usually when the phone rings – up goes the blood pressure! Solutions to combatting noise in the workplace Excessive noise can mean more than just mild irritations, it can harm

Off-site Monitoring

Benefits of off-site monitoring

What are the benefits of off-site monitoring? An ongoing debate within the security industry is the topic of reliability between remote monitoring and on-site monitoring. In truth, off-site monitoring is just one way to protect your property and can deter criminal activity before it even happens. Conventional methods of booms, guards, high walls and controlling key access points have long been seen as the norm, but is this really the most secure and cost-effective method? Off-site monitoring enables an active full-view over the entire property and specific movement management that can be customized by user requirements. The outlay of capital is also not as tremendous as one might think, but the biggest saving is in the operation cost – where conventional guarding solution takes a big toll on month-month operational expenses the operational expenses for off-site monitoring is comparatively significantly less saving you tremendously in the long run without compromising on security comfort. Furthermore, there is always the risk of a mistake being made by security guards on-site, which can sometimes be costly. By removing or mitigating the conventional with the added solution of monitoring from a control room, there is less of a risk for mistakes to be made by those on-site. Sometimes, having security guards on-site also boasts a negative impact. While they can invoke a sense of security in clients, or deter any risk of crime, these security staff can also do the opposite, by either intimidating people or participating in the crime themselves, bringing trust into play. Now, we’re not saying that remote monitoring will prevent this, but it will at the very least deter any sort of mistrust or wrongdoing from anyone. But what makes off-site monitoring special? Well, it allows for quicker reaction time because having these systems in place can bring along the extra

Security measures for your holiday shutdown period

Everyone loves the end of year shutdown. It gives us a reason to take a break, unwind, and go on an adventure. And by the end of the year, a break is usually much needed! But what happens to the office when everyone clears out for the holidays? Is it secure when no one’s there to keep an eye on things? Criminals today are clever, and look for signs that a property is vulnerable so they can make their move. But don’t worry, all is not lost! There are security measures you can implement to keep your business safe while you’re away from work. 5 holiday security measures to keep your business safe During the festive season, we generally see a spike in crime. This largely affects businesses that are vacant for a significant period of time. So to ensure yours is safe over the holidays, we recommend that you implement the following security measures: 1. Review your security policy with employees Before employees go on leave, make sure they understand the company security procedures and protocols. If employees need to lock away office valuables over the holiday period, let them know. And be sure to inform them of any rules if they are using the office space for holiday functions. If certain employees are planning to work over the holiday, inform them of the company cybersecurity policies to protect company data. 2. Make sure your office security equipment is working Whatever security measures you have put in place to keep your office safe, make sure they are functional. Test your alarm and make sure your locks and access control systems are working. And don’t forget your security cameras – activate them if they are off and make sure they are facing vulnerable areas. Also, ensure there are no holiday

Save water and maintain a thriving business

Water is a precious resource, so we have a duty to conserve it where possible. And not just at home, but in the office too. Is your business efficient when it comes to its water usage? There are plenty of ways you can save water at work without affecting the success of your business. And creating a water-wise office space is a good place to start.  5 steps to save water at work 1. Save water with building installations If your business is aiming to conserve water, water-wise building installations are a great way to boost your efforts. Installing water-efficient fixtures specifically designed to consume less water and energy can drastically reduce your company’s water usage. Restroom Auto Flush units are particularly effective in this regard, and offer the added benefit of increased hygiene in your ablution facilities. 2. Save water with water-wise cleaning methods Outsourcing your cleaning to a professional service provider, like FSG, can be an effective way to ensure minimal water usage in the cleaning process. Our corporate cleaning division has water conservation foremost in its methodology. We use microfiber mops with on-board reservoirs, featuring user-controlled release systems. These mean more efficient cleaning, with just 750ml of water in the on-board reservoir, cleaning up to 80 square meters. We also incorporate dry sweeping and “spot mopping” cleaning methods instead of the traditional mop and bucket. Our water-efficient cleaning methodology, paired with the controlled use of chemicals through proper dilution ratios, guarantees your business a hygienic and water-wise approach to cleaning. Be wise with your irrigation system’s water usage by only watering

5 reasons to invest in an access control system

Wanting to up your office security, but not sure where to begin? An electronic access control system would be a good place to start. You’ll be able to control who comes in and out of your premises – a valuable security measure in the prevention of crime. Keen to invest in one of these systems for your business? If you need more convincing before making the decision, take a look at these five benefits of access control. Benefits of access control 1. Seamless installation and integration Access control systems are pretty easy to set up, but we’ll take care of that for you so the process is completely hassle-free. With these security systems, you can customise authorised access to suit the specific security needs of your business. And swiping a card or entering a pin code at entrances is easy for employees to adjust to. Another benefit of access control is that you can track employee attendance by monitoring their movements in an out of the office. We’re talking accurate time entry records, automatically, all the time-efficient, right?  2. Security at multiple access points Criminals tend to look for low-risk opportunities that yield them a high reward. So in general, they won’t be willing to jump through hoops to steal something from your business. An access control system sets you up with just that – a deterrent. If access is restricted, there is less temptation. And not only will this prevent unwanted visitors from getting in, but from getting out too. Criminals will think twice about breaking into your business if they aren’t guaranteed a quick getaway.  3. Reduces employee theft Many employees work in isolation, far removed from the watchful eye of authority figures. Sometimes employees steal from their workplace, simply because they can. Out of sight, out of

Artificial grass vs real grass: Which is better for your sports field?

Sports field maintenance is no walk in the park. Grass fields need regular trims, irrigation and fertilising, especially during spring. There’s also the option of artificial grass, but this has a maintenance regimen of its own – one involving specialist contractors. So, artificial grass vs real grass – which comes out on top? In all honesty, the answer is relative. It’s up to you to decide. Let’s explore some benefits of each type so you can choose which is best for your business. Artificial grass vs real grass sports field Benefits of artificial grass: Doesn’t require monthly landscaping Unlike real grass fields, artificial grass fields don’t need mowing, weeding, shaping or fertiliser treatments. In fact, they require very little weekly maintenance – just a little rinsing and brushing from time to time to keep them free of dust and debris.   Allows for higher traffic  Sports fields with artificial grass don’t need ‘rest periods’ between games so the grass can regenerate. They can also withstand large crowds on a regular basis, without tarnishing. Not to mention the life expectancy of artificial grass exceeds that of real grass, and then some.  Looks great all the time Artificial grass is ‘evergreen’ – remaining aesthetically perfect all year round. It doesn’t die off and leave bare patches of dirt, nor does it go brown and muddy with heavy rainfall. Basically, it looks great, pretty much always, and with very little effort on your part.  Doesn’t require pesticides or fungicides Another big plus of artificial-grass fields is that they don’t need pesticides and fungicides. Synthetic grass cannot die off, as we’ve mentioned, or get eaten by pests. It’s durable and organism-free.  Needs little water Arguably, the best thing about artificial grass fields is that they don’t need watering. This is a huge benefit in arid
