Artificial grass vs real grass: Which is better for your sports field?

Sports field maintenance is no walk in the park. Grass fields need regular trims, irrigation and fertilising, especially during spring. There’s also the option of artificial grass, but this has a maintenance regimen of its own – one involving specialist contractors. So, artificial grass vs real grass – which comes out on top? In all honesty, the answer is relative. It’s up to you to decide. Let’s explore some benefits of each type so you can choose which is best for your business.

Artificial grass vs real grass sports field

Benefits of artificial grass:

Doesn’t require monthly landscaping

Unlike real grass fields, artificial grass fields don’t need mowing, weeding, shaping or fertiliser treatments. In fact, they require very little weekly maintenance – just a little rinsing and brushing from time to time to keep them free of dust and debris.

Allows for higher traffic

Sports fields with artificial grass don’t need ‘rest periods’ between games so the grass can regenerate. They can also withstand large crowds on a regular basis, without tarnishing. Not to mention the life expectancy of artificial grass exceeds that of real grass, and then some.

Looks great all the time

Artificial grass is ‘evergreen’ – remaining aesthetically perfect all year round. It doesn’t die off and leave bare patches of dirt, nor does it go brown and muddy with heavy rainfall. Basically, it looks great, pretty much always, and with very little effort on your part.

Doesn’t require pesticides or fungicides

Another big plus of artificial-grass fields is that they don’t need pesticides and fungicides. Synthetic grass cannot die off, as we’ve mentioned, or get eaten by pests. It’s durable and organism-free.

Needs little water

Arguably, the best thing about artificial grass fields is that they don’t need watering. This is a huge benefit in arid areas where water is scarce. In our drier, warmer climate, we should be saving as much water as we can. So this benefit is definitely something to take into consideration.

Benefits of real grass:

Improves air quality

Natural grass purifies the air – the blades catch airborne pollutants and carry them through to the soil, where they get broken down. Grass also releases oxygen and takes in carbon dioxide, giving us cleaner, fresher air.

Doesn’t overheat

Synthetic turf retains heat on hot, sunny days. Natural grass, on the other hand, has running water going through it, keeping it moist and cool, even during the peak heat of the day.

Repairs and regenerates itself

Unlike artificial grasses (which require expensive specialist repairs), natural grass grows and regenerates itself. Even though this requires time and patience, it’s certainly more cost-effective.

Prevents soil erosion

In excessive rainfall, plants play a crucial role in binding soil together. A sports field with real grass means more water absorption, less run-off and less soil erosion. And this means better soil preservation in the long run.

Better traction

Artificial grass has no ‘give’, making the traction too great when compared to that of natural grass. Natural grass has ideal traction for sport, causing fewer injuries.

Synthetic or natural, which grass will you choose?

In the artificial grass vs real grass sports field battle, both types come out on top!
